Egypt has recorded its biggest medal haul at a single Olympic Games after karateka Feryal Abdelaziz gave the country its sixth medal on Saturday. Abdelaziz became the first Egyptian female Olympian to win gold after beating Azerbaijan's Irina Zaretska 2-0 in the final of the kumite +61kg category, completing a remarkable sweep for the country's athletes in Tokyo. She also gave Egypt its first gold since the 2004 Athens Games when wrestler Karam Gaber triumphed in the men's Greco-Roman 96kg category. Abdelaziz's victory on the Olympic debut of karate marks Egypt's eighth gold in history. The country also bettered its five-medal haul in 1936, 1948 and 2004. However, the 1948 London Games is the most remarkable, given that Egypt had won two gold medals at the time.
