Culture Events: Weekend Picks Not sure what to do this weekend? A flash mob, music festival, various concerts, gallery openings and a provocative film screening are all taking place, Thursday through Sunday (17-20 May)
Thursday 17 May Flash Mob in Ramsis Train Station at 5.30pm A group call for a flash mob where a group of people assemble seemingly randomly for a few minutes, then simply leave. In this one everyone is to freeze for five minutes at Cairo's main train station. The event suggests meeting up starting 4:45 in front of the old black train outside the station then going inside at 5:30 pm for the freeze. Ramsis Train Station, Ramsis Street, Cairo Sharqi Blues & El-Door El-Awwal bands at El-Geneina Theatre at 8.30pm This performance promises a night of fusion: blues, jazz and oriental sounds by Sharqi Blues from the Nedtherlands and El-Door El-Awwal, one of Egypt's main jazz bands, on the open-air stage of El-Geneina Theater as part of the summer programme. Azhar Park, Salah Salem Road, Cairo Bakaboza Campaign in Artellewa Gallery at 8.30pm After a workshop took place in the gallery where participants created the ideal presidential candidate in puppet form, the crew take the puppet on a campaign trail posing important questions on what Egyptians want in an ideal candidate. The puppet they created is called El-Adel Bakaboza Abd Elgabar; and this event will be followed by a series of events where he will present his entire political programme. For those interested in being part of the performance, attendance is required at 6:30pm 19 Mohamed Ali El-Eseary Street, Ard El-Lewa, Giza, Cairo 'Elections' group exhibition in Darb1718 Whether the artists are idealists, activists, reformists or anything else, the monumental moment of election touches people in a way that brings about intense creativity. Darb1718 hosts this group exhibition portraying just that. Hind Samir,Ahmed Sabry,Hani Rashed,Sabah Naeem,Marwa Adel,Ali Abdel Mohsen,Ahmed el Shaer,Atef Ahmed,Amira Parree,Hala Abu Shady,Neven Emam are all on show Qasr Al-Shamee Street, behind the Hanging Church and Amr Mosque, Old Cairo. Friday 18 May Rock Stop Music Festival in Mohamed Ali Club at 3pm The Underground Music Federation (UMF) presents a line-up of Egyptian musicians along with Lebanese sensation Mashrou' Leila for a day of outdoor music concerts. The Egyptian line-up includes Hany Mostafa, Digla, The Percussion Show, Simplexity, Faking it and Shady Ahmed. Tickets must be bought in advance; for more information on tickets click here. The extension of Al-Bahr Al-A'zam Street, 7 km after Pharaonic Village in front Abou El-Nomros checkpoint - CairoAswan Road, Giza Three ballets by the Cairo Opera Ballet Company in Cairo Opera House at 8pm The evening will include three short ballets performed by the Cairo Opera Ballet Company: Les Danses Qu'on Croise based on the Hungarian Dances by Brahms, Bolero to the music by Ravel and Tango Dreams to the music by Astor Piazzolla. The Ballets will be performed on 17, 18, 20, 21, 22 and 23 May. More info here. Main Hall, Cairo Opera House, Zamalek, Cairo Otaak Band in El-Geneina Theatre at 8.30pm The Otaak band (US/Sudan) bring to the stage a mix of Beja blues and Afrobeat music from their recently released album "Bejawiya." Their performance is part of the Summer Programme of El-Geneina Theater. Azhar Park, Salah Salem Road, Cairo Saturday 19 May El-Ghouri Tanoura Group in Wekalet El-Ghouri at 7.30pm Expect traditional dance, vibrant music and colourful performances by El-Ghouri Dance Group this Saturday. They play every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. 3 Mohamed Abdou Street, behind Al-Azhar Mosque, Cairo Flute and Harp with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm The evening will include Mozart's concerto for flute, harp and orchestra in C Major, K299 with flautist Peter Olah and harpist Wassef. In the second half of the evening, the orchestra will perform Shostakovich's Symphony no. 5 in D minor Op. 47. More info here Main Hall, Cairo Opera House, Zamalek, Cairo Nagham Masry Band in El-Geneina Theatre at 8.30pm The band is set to play their contemporary music derived from and inspired by Egyptian cultural and political life, with their lyrics based on poems by Egyptian vernacular poets such as Salah Jahine and Ahmed Fouad Negm. Their performance is part of the Summer Programme of El-Geneina Theater. Azhar Park, Salah Salem Road, Cairo 'Dust' exhibition by Xenia Nikolskaya in Townhouse Gallery The Swedish photographer's current exhibition explores the conditions and relevance of these empty places in Egypt. It also presents "an entwined dualism:dust as materiality that layers the city, literally tracing the passage of time" and also as a "temporal metaphor that registers these changes on the level of memories, both past and present." First Floor space,10 Nabrawy Street, off Champollion Street, Downtown Cairo Sunday 20 May Opening of "Memories of the Body" exhibition by Marwa Adel at the French Cultural Institute at 7pm Marwa Adel, artist and photographer, presents her work exploring the human body and asking questions such as: Why are we afraid of our bodies? What is the relationship between our souls and our bodies? The exhibition runs till June 20. Madrasset Al-Huquq Al-Frinseya Street, Mounira, Cairo Opening of 'Gallery Collection' exhibition in Al Masar Gallery at 7pm The exhibition showcases some of the finest artworks from exhibitions the gallery has held over the past four years, including works by the stars of 20th-century Egyptian modern art, pioneers of the third, fourth and fifth generations, and the young artists of today. On display will be works by Adel El-Siwi, Ahmed Fouad Selim, Essam Marouf, Georges Bahgory, Hamdi Attia, Ibrahim El-Dessouki, Mahmoud Abdullah, Sami Aboul Azm, Sami Abdul Azm, Kareem El-Qurity, Leila Ezzet, Omar El-Nagdy and others. Al-Masar Gallery, Baehler's Mansion 157b, 26 July Street, Side Entrance on Isaac Jacob Street (ground floor), Zamalek, Cairo Opening of 'Egypt Photo Marathon' exhibition in Contemporary Image Collective at 7pm In the Egypt Photo Marathon competition, two parallel marathons of 12 and 6 hours each took place last month in Cairo, Alexandria, Ismailia, Nweiba. The exhibition at CIC will showcase the results of the marathon with themes that revolve around leadership, co-existence, and decision-making. 22 Abdel-Khalek Tharwat, Downtown Cairo Screening of documentary 'Sex Talk' in Gallery Misr at 7.30pm The sixty-minute film focuses on sexuality within marriage based on the accounts of a number of males and females, along with sexual health professionals and medical doctors.
