Egypt's Ahly footballers finally return home from Mali Ahly football squad is back home after a military plane carried the team out of the troubled west African nation ending a five-day drama
Ahly said on its website that its football team has safely returned to Cairo at 8am on Friday after a 13-hour trip aboard an Egyptian military plane. Ahly's drama in Mali ended on Thursday when the Egyptian military aircraft tasked with bringing back Ahly's stranded delegation left Bamako to Nigeria before returning to Cairo. The Egyptian champions were stranded in Mali after Sunday's 1-0 defeat against Malian side Stade Malien in the first leg of the CAF Champions League round 16, when the west African nation saw a military counter-coup starting Monday which prevented Ahly's delegation from returning to Egypt on Monday as scheduled. Following Bamako's airport closure, the Egyptian military aircraft which carried the team home landed in the Ivory Coast on Wednesday after receiving Mali's authorisation to land in Bamako on Thursday.
