Tens of protestors in Asiut in Upper Egypt organised Wednesday marches against clashes that occurred earlier in the day in Abbasiya, a district in Cairo that houses the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence, from which the ruling military council operates.
Protestors chanted "Martyrs, sleep and rest ... and we will continue fighting," and "Tantawi tell Anan ... we will not be ruled by the head of SCAF," and "Tantawi tell Anan, the revolution is still in the field," making reference to the head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi and his right hand man, General Sami Anan.
Islam Khashaba, member of the Revolution Youth Coalition in Assiut told Ahram Portal that marches took place all over Assiut, denouncing the Abbasiya violence as orchestrated by the security services and demanding fair and speedy investigations into the events.
Unidentified assailants attacked protesters in Abbasiya Square in the early hours of Wednesday with cement-based bombs, stones, Molotov cocktails, birdshot guns and teargas canisters, according to eyewitness reports.
Protesters fought the attack with stones and set up a second field hospital to treat the wounded that included cases of broken limbs and suffocation due to inhaling teargas.
The attack was the second of its kind on the protesters in less than 72 hours. A similar attack Saturday reportedly left one protester dead and tens injured. As many as 20 are reported killed in Wednesday's fierce clashes.
