At least 5 dead in Abbasyia clashes, says health ministry Estimates from Wednesday attack against Abbasyia sit-in so far confirm the deaths of five protesters and the injury of dozens says Tahrir Doctors
An official source from the ministry of Health told Egypt's state TV that at least 5 protesters were killed and dozens injured in the clashes that took place earlier Wednesday morning between protesters who have been camping outside the Ministry of defence in Abbasyia, Cairo and plain clothed men believed to be residents of the area. Tahrir Doctors released a statement early Wednesday confirming the death of two of the Abbasyia demonstrators during what they called “the Wednesday massacre”. They declared both deaths were a result of live ammunition shot to the head, adding that another is in a critical stage suffering from a shot to the chest. The numbers announced by the group at rround 4.30 am is believed to have at least doubled during the following hours, as eye wittnesses from the field hospital is the area estimate the deaths to have reached 8 casualties. At least four at demonstrators suffered from birdshots in the eyes and twenty in other parts of the face. The report added that this was just a preliminary estimate as more injuries and deaths might still be revealed. The doctors condemned the closure of several nearby hospitals including the Demerdash hospital, Ain Shams and Al-Hussein, leaving the injured without any medical aid. The only hospital which received injured was Al-Shefa, which eventually was besieged by “thugs” who kidnapped those transported in and attacked ambulance personnel. Unknown assailants attacked early Wednesday protesters who have been camping near the headquarters of the defence ministry for the past four days. The sit-in which was triggered in anger at the disqualification of Salafist Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail from the presidential race has turned into a protest against military rule. The assailants attacked the protesters in the early hours of Wednesday with cement-based bombs, stones, molotov, birdshot guns and teargas cannisters according to eyewitness reports. This is the second such attack on the protesters in less than 72 hours. The last attack on Saturday reportedly left one protester dead and tens injured. Tahrir Doctors are a group of medical doctors who voluntary aid those injured at protests.
