CAIRO: Despite claims by Egypt's Minister of Interior Mohammed Ibrahim that the security forces only use tear gas to disperse protesters in the vicinity of the ministry of interior, Dr. Khairy Abdel Dayem, the head of the country's Doctors Union was injured on Sunday evening, after being shot with birdshot by police. He had been on a mission to check on the field hospitals in the area around the ministry of interior and Tahrir Square. Clashes broke out in Bab el-Louq, only a few meters away from Mohammed Mahmoud Street, after security forces attacked the demonstrators with a barrage of tear gas and birdshot on Sunday Night, which prompted Dayem to go on a visit to check on the field hospitals, where he was then shot in his nose. His injury comes amid the ministry`s repeated claims that it only uses tear gas in dispersing the protesters and denied the use of rubber bullets, birdshot and live ammunition. This belies the fact that dozens of protesters have lost an eye as a result of birdshot, while others have died as a result of rubber bullets and other munitions being fired in downtown Cairo. Bikyamasr.com's Editor Joseph Mayton saw first-hand a man get shot in the back from rubber bullets, “falling to the ground immediately,” during a raid on protesters in downtown Cairo.
