Protesters began entering Tahrir Square Friday morning in preparation for a demonstration to 'save the revolution' organised by Islamist groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafist Calling and Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya. Four stages were erected and supporters of former presidential candidate Hazem Abu Ismail, who have come to the capital to protest against his disqualification from the presidential race, were a notable presence in the square. A number of banners demanding the continuation of the revolution and condemning military rule were hung around the square. Slogans include, “No elections under military rule,” “No constitution under military rule” and “No former regime icons for president.” Protesters are also calling for the cancellation of Article 28 of the presidential election law and for the disbandment of the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission. Some protesters are also demanding that the Disenfranchisement Law be applied vigorously to members of the former regime and for the release of political detainees. Traffic in Tahrir Square was moving freely and no popular security checkpoints, which usually secure the square and direct traffic during protests, were in place.
