Zidan benched for first time as Mainz crush Bremen Mohamed Zidan stays on the bench as Mainz claim an emphatic 3-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Saturday
Mohamed Zidan was benched for the first time after joining Mainz as his side crushed Werder Bremen 3-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Adam Szalai opened the scoring after 19 minutes before Cameroon's Jean-Eric Choupo-Moting scored a second-half brace to give Mainz a precious win that lifted them to the 10th place in the Bundesliga table with 33 points. Egyptian forward Zidan, who made an impressive start to his third Mainz stint after joining from Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window, remained on the bench throughout the game. It was the first time for Zidan not to start a Bundesliga game after moving to Mainz, for which he scored six goals in consecutive matches before easing off a bit. Mainz coach Christian Heidel called on the 30-year-old on Wednesday to return to his goal-scoring form, saying he was not satisfied with the forward's recent displays.
