Egypt forward Mohamed Zidan scored on his first appearance with Mainz in Saturday's 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Schalke.
Zidan opened the scoring after 14 minutes but Schalke's Chinedu Obasisecured a share of spoils 13 minutes after thebreak.
Dortmund's Zidan joined Mainz on a six-month loan contract until June 2012, with an option for a permanent move until June 2014, while the financial agreement between the two clubs has not been disclosed.
Schalke missed the chance to join Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga, dropping two points off the pace.
The visitors took an early lead throughZidan, whobeat the keeper at the far post with a half-volley following a neat long ball. However, Schalke completely dominated in the second half, levelling with a fine Chinedu Obasi strike in the 58th minute and squandering half a dozen chances to score the winner.
The result left Schalke on 41 points from 20 games, two behind leaders Dortmund, who eased past Nuremberg 2-0 on Friday. Borussia Moenchengladbach moved up to 40 points after their goalless draw at VfL Wolfsburg.
Bayern Munich, also on 40, can reclaim top spot with victory at Hamburg SV later on Saturday.
