Brotherhood's FJP sweeps runoff polls in Menoufiya Freedom and Justice Party captures 6 of 8 parliamentary seats in historic NDP stronghold, according to official results
The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) has captured the majority of seats for Egypt's Menoufiya governorate, results of second-round runoff elections in Egypt's first post-Mubarak parliamentary polls showed Friday. According to official results, the FJP won six of the eight seats up for grabs in the governorate, with remaining two seats going to the Salafist Nour Party and the Reform and Development Party (RDP). Situated in Egypt's Nile Delta, Menoufiya is the hometown of former Egyptian leaders Anwar Sadat – who founded the now-defunct National Democratic Party (NDP) in the mid-1970s – and ousted president Hosni Mubarak. Menoufiya is also hometown to several former leading NDP figures, including the late Kamal El-Shazly and steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz. In the this week's runoff vote, the governorate's first and third electoral districts saw FJP candidates – Helmy Bakr, Saeed Hassan, Nasr Tahoon and Mahmoud Aboul Magd – clinch seats reserved for both professionals and workers. In the second electoral district, the FJP's Saeed El-Azab won the workers' seat, while the RDP's Mohamed Anwar Sadat – nephew of the late president – won that reserved for professionals.
