A Cairo criminal court has acquitted on Sunday two police officers in a retrial for the torturing to death of a lawyer at a Cairo police station in 2015. In December 2015, the two policemen, a lieutenant-colonel and a major in the country's National Security Agency, were convicted in the case and sentenced to five years in prison. Lawyer Karim Hamdy, 27, was detained for interrogation at a police station in Matariya district in east Cairo on violence-related crimes and belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group. According to the forensic report, Hamdy had suffered rib fractures and a brain haemorrhage. The sentence was later overturned by an appeals court, which ordered a retrial. Today's verdict can still be appealed.
