Egyptian football: A look back at 2010
As a new year dawns, Ahram Online looks back at the key markers of 2010

4 January: Egypt coach Hassan Shehata named his final squad for the African Cup of Nations 2010 dropping out star striker Ahmed Hossam “Mido” for new boy Mohamed Nagy “Gedo”. The Ittihad of Alexandria striker silenced all critics by scoring the winner for the Pharaohs against Mali 1-0 in the last stop before the tournament.
12 January: The Pharaohs made a strong debut in their title defense campaign coming back from a goal down to beat the Nigerian Super Eagles 3-1 courtesy to goals from Emad Metaab (34), Ahmad Hassan (55) and Gedo (87).
16 January: Mozambique was Egypt's second victim conceding a 2-0 defeat as Dario Kan scored in his own nets in the 47th minute and substitute Gedo secured the win again.
20 January: They completed their perfect group stage run as Ahmed Elmohamady and Metaab downed minnows Benin 2-0.
25 January: Egypt had a poor start to their quarter final against Cameroon as skipper Ahmed Hassan scored in his own goal early in the game. He made a great fight back and stuck twice to give his team a 2-1 lead against the indomitable Lions and Gedo slid in the third.
28 January: After missing the World Cup ticket to Algeria, Hassan Shehata's men were in a revenge mission in the semis. They thrashed Algeria 4-0 with Hosny Abderabou (39 pen), Mohamad Zidan (65), Mohamad Abdel-Shafy and (81) and Gedo (93) on target to spark joy in Egypt.
31 January: Final day and Super sub Gedo scored the winner against Ghana in the dying minutes to give Egypt a third successive title and a record of 7 titles. Ahmad Hassan was named best player of the competition while Gedo won the Golden Boot after scoring five goals.
3 March: The Pharaohs made it to the great Wembley stadium to play against England in a warm up ahead of their World Cup campaign. Zidan put the African champions in the lead at the break but the Three Lions reacted in the second half with three goals from Peter Crouch (56, 79) and Shaun Wright-Philips (74).
30 April: Ahly clinch their 35th title of the Egyptian league and the 6th in a row after a comfortable 3-0 win over Mansoura.
7 June: Cup winners Harras El-Hodoud defended successfully their title after denying Ahly the local double in the final game 1-1 (5-4pen).
22 June: Ahly made the transfer of the season after buying Mohamed Nagy ‘Gedo' from Ittihad of Alexandria. A deal that marked the end of one of Egypt's sagas as the player had initially signed contracts with Zamalek in January but refused to complete the move in order to join the Red Devils.
25 July: Ahly made a strong debut in the new season winning the Egyptian Supercup title after beating Harras El-Hodoud 1-0 thanks to a fine strike from inspirational playmaker Mohamad Abou-Treika.
11 August: Egypt hammered DR Congo 6-3 in a friendly game in Cairo stadium. Ahmad Ali made a dream debut for the National team scoring a double (2, 34) while Ahmad Fathi (41), Mohamad Abou-Treika (44), Ahmad Hassan (49) and Gedo (67) completed the rout.
4 September: The Pharaohs made a frustrating debut for their 2012 ACN qualifiers as they were held at home 1-1 by Sierra Leone. Zamalek defender Mahmoud Fathallah canceled Mustapha Bangura's early lead.
10 September: Ismaily was eliminated from the CAF champions League quarter finals after losing to Algerian side JS Kabylie 1-0 their fourth of the group stage.
10 October: Seven-time African champions Egypt were stunned by minnows Niger on losing 1-0 in 2012 ACN qualifiers to relegate them to the bottom of the group and put their defense title campaign in jeopardy.
16 October: Esperance Nigerian striker Michael Eneramo scored with his forearm the winner against Ahly 1-0 to eliminate them for the CAF Champions League semi-final. The Tunisian side go through thanks to the away goal rule.
17 November: Egypt beat Australia in a friendly game in Cairo. Enppi ‘s striker Ahmad Abdel-Zaher scored his 1 first international goal (29), Gedo doubled the lead (60) and Mohamad Zidan (80) who marked his comeback after a 7-month lay-off because of a knee injury.
21 November: Ahly coach Hossam El-Badry stepped from his job after losing to Ismaily 3-1 in the league. Abdel-Aziz Abdel-Shafy was appointed as a caretaker until January.
15 December: The December FIFA ranking was unveiled placing Egypt in the 9th place -- their highest ever in the world's rankings.
16 December: The Pharaohs had another dig in form as they were handed their first ever defeat against Qatar 2-1 in a friendly game held in Doha. Sebastian Soria and Wael Gomaa (og) scored for the hosts while Walid Soliman scored Egypt's consolation goal.
