Art Alert: Documentary The True Cost to be screened in Cairo
Published in Ahram Online on 10 - 05 - 2017

The documentary film The True Cost will be screened at SANE Egypt on 16 May, part of a collaboration between Fashion Revolution Egypt and Up-Fuse to raise awareness about the impact of "fast fashion" and the current fashion industry.
Directed by Andrew Morgan, the 2015 documentary aims to shed light on what's behind the clothes we choose to buy and wear. Morgan goes beyond the product itself to reveal the process responsible for gross negligence with regard to human lives and environmental destruction.
The True Cost invites the audience to consider a "slow fashion" alternative that is instead focused on ethical and sustainable approaches to fashion and textile production.
Fashion Revolution Egypt is part of a three-year-old worldwide movement with a presence in more than 90 countries. According to the official website, Fashion Revolution promotes an equal-benefit collaboration across the whole supply chain of fashion production, starting with the people behind the production processes.
The movement works to innovate the current fashion industry through increasing transparency with consumers in hopes of creating a safer, more sustainable and ethical future industry built on fair-trade measures.
Up-Fuse is a social enterprise, based in Cairo, that designs and produces "environmentally sustainable" bags and products manufactured from upcycled plastic bags, according to their official website.
The brand is committed to establishing transparency across production chains and developing the skills of the local artisans with whom they work.
Programme:
Tuesday 17 May, from 7pm to 11pm
Up-Fuse, 105 Al-Banafseg 10 compound, New Cairo, Cairo
