Grammy-winning Egyptian Jazz musician Fathy Salama and his band Sharkiat are introducing his 'Oriental Indie Rock' concert at the Cairo Opera House on Sunday 9 April. The concert set is basically on his fusion album Don't Climb The Pyramids, which he released back in 1998 in collaboration with “Les Maniacs,” a Swiss rock band from Geneva. Featuring vocalist Amr Yehia, the Sharkiat band member performing include Ayman Sedky (percussion), Saleh El-Artist (accordion), Sherif Alaa (guitars), Wael Alfashny (percussion and vocals), Ramadan Mansour (tabla), Andre Segone (bass) and Simo (Drums). The concert is the second of its kind this season for Salama, who performed a similar concert in October. Salama, the only Arab recipient of a Grammy Award, formed Sharkiat in 1988, which has performed over 2,000 concerts on tours at international jazz and music festivals. Salama received the BBC music award of 2004, and in 2000 he received the Cairo International Film Festival prize. His collaborations with renowned artists like Youssou N'Dour, Cesaria Evora and others produced nine albums, two of which feature the Sharkiat project. He composed and arranged songs for many Egyptian musicians and bands, including Mohamed Mounir, Amr Diab and Ali El-Hagar. Salama is regularly keen on making workshops for young promising musicians, and his participants have included Dina El-Wedidi, Masar Egbary, Sharmofeers, CairoKee, and Mohamed Mohsen.
