Nigeria court overrules election challenge Nigeria judiciary overrules main opposition party's election petition challenging president Goodluck Jonathan's win last April
A Nigerian court has overruled a main opposition party's challenge months after the incumbent was declared winner of an April 16 vote. Judge Kumai Akaas said in an election tribunal in Abuja Tuesday that he and four other judges have unanimously dismissed the Congress for Progressive Change's election petition. Opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari's party challenged the results of the 16 April vote that gave Goodluck Jonathan a four-year term. April election results showed Jonathan won 22.4 million votes, and Buhari came in second place with 12.2 million votes. The opposition party enjoyed support in the country's predominantly Muslim north where a wave of postelection riots left at least 500 dead and more than 40,000 people displaced. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/25697.aspx
