Egypt accounted for 29 per cent of all announced and planned low-carbon hydrogen projects in the Arab region by the end of 2024, maintaining its regional lead, the country's statistics agency said on Tuesday. The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) said Egypt had 37 projects focused mainly on green hydrogen and green ammonia, out of 127 across the Arab world. Egypt is among the few countries in the region to have launched a national hydrogen strategy. The announcement came as Egypt marked the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the 1987 Montreal Protocol on phasing out ozone-depleting substances. CAPMAS also reported that electricity generated from renewable sources rose to 11.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2023/24, up from 10.6 TWh a year earlier. Egypt improved its standing in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025, rising to 20th place among 67 countries, compared with 22nd a year earlier. It ranked ahead of South Africa (38), Algeria (51), and the United Arab Emirates (65). Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English Download
