Egypt keeps 36th place in nearly unchanged FIFA December rankings
Published in Ahram Online on 22 - 12 - 2016

Egypt's national football team has held its position at number 36 in the FIFA global football rankings published on 22 December.
The Pharaohs climbed ten positions in FIFA's ranking last month after beating Ghana 2-0 in Alexandria and topping their 2018 World Cup qualifiers group.
However, Egypt has not played in December and has maintained its overall position in the rankings, placing fourth in the continent and second among Arab countries after Tunisia (35), Ivory Coast (34) and Senegal (33).
FIFA's December ranking witnessed no major position changes in the top 50 places, with Argentina still in the lead ahead of Brazil, Germany, Chile, and Belgium.
Looking to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1990, Egypt lead Group E with six points, two ahead of challengers Uganda, who defeated Congo.
The record seven-time African champions, Egypt will start their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) campaign in January, having been drawn in Group D alongside Ghana, Mali and Uganda.
Under the direction of Argentinean coach Cuper, the Pharaohs will begin their training camp for CAN 2017 on 1 January and face Tunisia in their only friendly game before the tournament seven days later.
Egypt made it into the world's top 10 when they won three successive CAN trophies in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
In other highlights from December, Rwanda was the best mover in this month's rankings, jumping nine places, while Cuba fell hardest, dropping 26 places.
