Egyptian activist Sanaa Seif was released from prison late Tuesday in Cairo after serving a six-month sentence for "insulting the judiciary." The activist was released from El-Siyada Zeinab police station in Cairo late Tuesday. Last May this year, Seif was referred to trial and convicted for insulting the judiciary after she refused to cooperate with the prosecution during her questioning on accusations of inciting protests and distributing posters in April against the Egyptian-Saudi maritime border demarcation deal. The 21-year old rights' activist surrendered herself to the authorities in May to serve the jail sentence, and refused to appeal the court verdict saying she “no longer has confidence in the judicial system.” Seif is the daughter of late human rights lawyer Ahmed Seif El-Islam; her sister Mona is also a human rights activist, and her brother is well-known blogger Alaa Abdel-Fattah, who is serving a jail sentence for protesting illegally. In 2014, Sanaa Seif was sentenced to three years in prison for illegally demonstrating against the 2013 controversial Protest Law. She served 15 months of her jail term before receiving a presidential pardon in September 2015.
