Egypt's striking lawyers object to jail threat in new judiciary authority law A new draft law on judicial authority is coming under widespread attack by lawyers and even judges themselves
Tens of lawyers protested Wednesday at the criminal courts complex in New Cairo to object against a draft new judiciary authority law. The lawyers demand that all articles affecting lawyers' immunity during their work be removed, or else they will escalate their protests. They also demand the judicial authority law be discussed in parliament after the Lawyers' Syndicate general assembly elections, and before being officially issued. The protesting lawyers also object to the delay in Lawyers' Syndicate elections. According to Article 18 of the draft judiciary authority law, any action from lawyers in court considered to be against judges will be regarded as insult to judges whose maximum penalty is five years in jail. The controversial article also gives judges the power to detain lawyers inside the courtroom if they disrupt order in the court. Among the articles that lawyers are objecting to, another controversial article assigns a specific quota for judges' sons to join the General Prosecution. On Tuesday, hundreds of lawyers protested against the draft law in front of courts in Cairo, Giza and Ismailia, while on Wednesday, aside from the protest at criminal courts complex in New Cairo, hundreds of lawyers in Dakhalia governorate started a general strike, emptying courts of lawyers, to object to the law. The new judiciary authority law is being prepared by the Judges' Club and has met criticism from several political powers, including judges themselves. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/24590.aspx
