VIDEO: Lively Egypt hold Brazil in U-20 World Cup A lively Egypt side prove they are a force to be reckoned with after holding heavyweights Brazil to a 1-1 draw in the U-20 World Cup on Saturday
Egypt produced a promising and lively display to share honors with four-time winners Brazil following a 1-1 draw in their U-20 World Cup opener in Barranquilla on Saturday. Brazil needed 12 minutes to take the lead through a free header from Danilo, who was at fault as the young Pharaohs leveled the score on 26 minutes, thanks to a goal from Zamalek midfielder Omar Gaber. Underdogs Egypt, whose best ever position was a third-place finish at the 2001 tournament in Argentina, could have claimed all three points and embarrassed Brazil but were hindered by some poor finishing touches. Egypt also had to thank goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawy after he pulled off some impressive saves to thwart the Selecao on a number of occasions throughout their opening Group E encounter. He was substituted in the dying minutes after suffering an injury. Earlier in the day, minnows Austria and Panama played out a goalless draw in the other group game. Egypt face Panama in their next match on Monday. Bright start Egypt made a bright start and could have taken an 18th-second lead after forward Mohamed Salah, who was part of Egypt's three-pronged attack that also featured Mohamed Hamdy and Mohamed Ibrahim, robbed a defender to break clear but his left-foot shot hit the side netting. Brazil took control afterwards, launching a wave of attacks and exploiting Egypt's set-piece weakness. Egypt needed a superb save from the in-form El-Shennawy to palm away a header from Danilo on six minutes. However, he was powerless to stop the Brazil defender from opening the scoring six minutes later. The Porto man rose unmarked to head home a pinpoint corner from Inter Milan playmaker Philippe Coutinho. Egypt appeared hardly affected by Brazil's opener, with the likes of Salah, Ibrahim and Gaber, who started as a right wing-back before switching to a more attacking role after his side fell behind, wreaking havoc upfront. Hamdy wasted a golden opportunity to draw Egypt level on 17 minutes when he superbly exchanged passes with Salah on the edge of the area to elude Brazil's defenders but his weak close-range shot was blocked by keeper Gabriel. Gaber headed just over the bar in the 20th minute after a cross from Ahmed Sobhy but he made amends six minutes later to grab the equalizer as Egypt's pressure eventually paid dividends. Danilo miscued an attempted clearance following another cross from Sobhy and Gaber pounced to send a shot that looked innocuous but it still struck the hands of Gabriel and looped into the net. Eased off Both sides eased off after the break, as Egypt preferred to keep possession as long as they could to secure a share of spoils. They still had a chance to go ahead three minutes after the restart though when Hamdy neatly laid off the ball to the onrushing Ibrahim after a breakaway but the diminutive attacking midfielder's shot from inside the area narrowly missed the target. Brazil also had some half-chances to restore their advantage but were thwarted by El-Shennawy, who lived up to his billing as the successor of veteran keeper Essam El-Hadary, who is widely regarded as the best shot-stopper in Egypt's history. He was taken off with three minutes remaining after a sliding challenge by Brazil's Henrique injured his face, making way for understudy guardian Mohamed Awwad.
