Egyptian renationalisation petition gets 75,000 signatures Omar Effendi's return to public ownership sets an example for renationalising once state-owned enterprises, say parties on Tahrir
Over 75,000 people have signed a petition demanding formerly state-owned private Egyptian companies be renationalised. The petition was launched on Cairo's Tahrir Square by the Democratic Workers Party, the Revolutionary Socialists, the National Front for Justice and Democracy and the journalism syndicate's Committee for Press Freedom. A statement from the Democratic Worker's Party said that the administrative court ruling that ruled illegal the privatisation of Egyptian retail giant Omar Effendi should also apply to the sale of other companies, such as Tanta Flax and Ginning Cotton, as well as other industrial enterprises it believes are 'eager' to return to the public sector. The statement added that the campaign will include workers from the troubled companies, a fact that will helpstrengthen their calls for change.
