Egypt's vehicle market falls a third in May Sales of cars, buses and trucks have all seen marked falls year-on-year, according to the latest figures from automobile council
Egyptian vehicle sales dropped 32.4 per cent year-on-year (y-on-y) to reach 14,798 vehicles in May 2011, according to figures from the Automotive Marketing Information Council (AMIC). This was down from 21,896 vehicles in May 2010. The number of passenger cars sold in May dropped 30.2 per cent y-o-y to reach 11,182 versus 16,013 cars in May 2010, but grew by 26.6 per cent month-on-month versus April 2011 when only 8,830 passenger cars were sold. A total of 43,237 passenger cars have been sold this year to date, down by 42.8 per cent on the same period in 2010. Bus sales also plummeted by 55 per cent to reach 1,039 buses versus 2,307 in May 2010. The fall in truck sales was less dramatic but still down by 27.9 per cent at 2,577 vehicles as opposed to 3,576 last year.
