Egyptian goalie El-Hadary attracts English clubs Wigan and Leicester Essam El-Hadary's stint in Sudan could come to an end if reported interest from England materialises
The 38-year-old international goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary has been reportedly eyed by officials from English sides Wigan Athletic and Leicester City. “Leicester and Wigan want Egypt goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary,” Britain's Daily Mail newspaper reported on Wednesday, adding that “he is available for a knockdown fee from Al Merreikh of Sudan and is eager to play in England.” The former FC Sion keeper made his first appearance for the Pharaohs in 1996 and went on to win 124 caps and four African Cups of Nations. He starred in the last successive three (2006, 2008 and 2010) besides gaining an early title in 1998 while he was a substitute goalie to Nader El-Sayed. El-Hadary guarded the net of the top three Egyptian clubs, Ahly, Zamalek and Ismaily. His time at Ahly yielded three African Champions Leagues, three African Super Cups and seven league titles. A former club to Egyptian strikers Amr Zaki and Ahmed Hossam “Mido”, Wigan Athletic survived relegation on the last day of the season to finish 16th in the English Premier League while Leicester City currently play in the Football League Championship.
