Algeria coach laments poor displays of Brahimi and Feghouli Algeria coach Christian Gourcuff has criticised Yacine Brahimi and Sofiane Feghouli, the team's biggest stars who failed to live up to expectations during the Africa Cup of Nations.
"Brahimi and Feghouli didn't show their real quality and I am sorry for that," the Frenchman told a press conference after returning to Algeria on Tuesday following their quarter-final exit at the Equatorial Guinea finals. "Valencia midfielder Feghouli has been impressive during the qualifiers but he failed to reproduce that form at the finals. And I don't think that Porto's Brahimi didn't reproduce his renowned forme because of his playing position with us," he added. Media pundits in Algeria echoed Gourcuff's criticism of the duo, claiming that the players were too selfish and failed to inspire their teammates. They were also blamed for a lack of defensive support during the games. The Desert Foxes conceded five goals and scored six in their four-match campaign, which included a 3-1 quarter-final defeat by the Ivory Coast . Gourcuff also confirmed that he will remain in charge of Algeria despite failing to meet the Algeria FA's target of reaching the Nations Cup semi-finals. The North African giants were hot favorites to reach the final after appearing as Africa's best performers during the 2014 World Cup. Algeria, who were led by Bosnian tactician Vahid Halilhodzic back then, were the only African team to advance to the last 16 before suffering a 2-1 defeat by eventual champions Germany after extra time. Gourcuff, who took over in July 2014, revealed that he will make some changes in the squad ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
