Security forces killed a man and injured another late Friday when they failed to stop at a security checkpoint in North Sinai's Al-Arish, Egypt's army spokesman stated. In a statement, the army spokesman said army officers attempted to stop the car of the two men, and fired warning shots, but they still refused to stop. Security forces examined the car and found it registered under a different name than those of the two men. There was no written authorisation from the car owner for them to drive the car. Security forces are currently investigating the background of the two men, the statement read. Earlier on Friday, unknown assailants staged an RPG attack on a security checkpoint near Rafah in North Sinai. No deaths or casualties were reported. Egypt's army is currently battling a jihadist militant insurgency in North Sinai. A three-month state of emergency was declared in some parts of the governorate late October 2014 following a major attack that left 31 army personnel dead and at least 30 others injured. The army has faced jihadists in Sinai for almost a decade, but the situation intensified in the past year and a half and expanded into Cairo and the Nile Delta, killing hundreds of army and police personnel. Civilians too have been caught up in the violence. Two main jihadists groups have claimed responsibility for most of these attacks: Anjad Misr and Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, which swore allegiance to Islamic State (IS) in November. The military has regularly announced killing and arresting hundreds of suspected "terrorists."
