Egyptian striker Ahmed Hossam “Mido” may start for the first time this season when his club Ajax Amsterdam take on NEC Nijmegen in the Dutch league Saturday.
“We will see if Mido is fit enough to be in the starting lineup today or not,” Ajax coach Martin Jol told Dutch newspaper De TelegraafSaturday.
The towering striker scored the opener —his first league goal—in Ajax's 2-0 victory over VVV Venlo last Sunday after coming on as a second-half substitute.
“Now, I want to play as a starter as I am ready to have more action,” said Mido after the VVV Venlo game.
Jol praised the 27-year old striker, whom he also managed at Tottenham Hotspur, after the game, assuring that he is on the right track.
Mido notched his first goal of the season when Ajax crushed second division side Veendam 3-0 to reach the domestic cup's 16 round last month.
Mido joined Ajax in the close of season on a season-long loan from English second division side Middlesbrough but found it difficult to break into the starting lineup due to fitness problems.
He appeared in a good shape lately, however, and could be in contention to start out against Nijmegen, to make up for the absence of banned striker Luis Suarez of Uruguay.
Ajax, who won the last of their 29 Dutch titles in 2004, lie fourth in the table on 31 points, three points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven.
