Egypt's prime minister freezes activity of Qena governor Governor effectively suspended for three months as the prime minister seeks an end to the protests that have brought Qena to a halt
Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf has decided to freeze the activity of Qena governor, Emad Shehata Mikhail, for three months. The secretary-general of the Qena governorate, Maged Abdel Kareem, will assume the governor's responsibilities till further notice. On Egyptian televison, Sharaf called on the locals of Qena to return life there back to normal. The city has been disrupted by protests since 15 April at the appointment of Mikhail, a Copt and former head of police in Giza, Cairo. As part of the protests, streets and railway tracks were blocked, stopping trains from entering and leaving the city.
