CAIRO: The result of the elections and the Muslim Brotherhood winning a large percentage is not a big surprise, former Egyptian Prime Minister Yehia al-Gamal today reported. “The fact that other ultraconservative Islamic trends made big wins is astonishing,” al-Gamal admitted. “The Muslim Brotherhood is an old and experienced Islamic trend with a long history,” he continued. “It is expected that they took 40 percent of the votes in the first phase.” Al-Gamal did express concern about the Islamic trends influence over the drafting of the new Egyptian constitution. “The new constitution must be agreed upon by all political trends,” he said. “It must guarantee public freedoms and social rights.” Egypt will not accept religious or political dictatorship, he added. “The Egyptian people will learn from these experiments, correct their path and achieve all demands,” al-Gamal assured. “Kamal el-Ganzouri studied economic problems in Egypt and can help fix the economic decline,” al-Gamal added, referencing the newly installed Egyptian Prime Minister.
