Polling stations today opened again in Egypt for the second day of the first parliamentary elections since longtime strongman former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising. The first phase of the People's Assembly elections includes the following Egyptian governorates: Cairo, Alexandria, Damietta, Kafr el-Sheikh, Fayoum, Luxor, Port Said, Asyut and the Red Sea. Voter turnout yesterday was enormous and the Supreme Electoral Committee decided to extend the voting period to 9:00 p.m. The Committee and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) today pledged to prevent the errors made during yesterday's elections, including delays at polling stations. The United Nations and other countries yesterday praised Egypt's handling of elections yesterday.
