Syrian activists will hold a symbolic funeral for the Arab League, responding to what they described as a weak stance towards the Syrian crisis, they said in a statement. The statement criticized the Arab League, saying it has not taken strict enough measures against the Syrian regime, and demanded the cancellation of the Arab initiative. Arab foreign ministers are scheduled to meet Saturday to discuss the Arab Initiative presented by the Arab League. Security forces have killed thousands of peaceful demonstrators since an uprising demanding that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad step down began this spring. Syrian activists organized a number of demonstrations and protests in front of the Arab League's headquarters in Cairo several times since the uprising began. Over 230 Syrian activists and intellectuals signed a statement demanding the suspension of Syrian membership in the Arab League, the imposition of tough sanctions against the Syrian regime, and securing international protection for civilians in Syria.
