Cairo-based Syrians are planning a protest on Tuesday in front of the Arab League headquarters. The demonstration will coincide with the 136th meeting of Arab foreign ministers. A source within the Syrian community in Cairo told state-run news agency MENA on Sunday that the protesters will demand Arab ministers to fufil their duties and work toward stopping the bloody crackdown of Bashar al-Assad's regime against pro-democracy protests that started in March. The source said protesters will hold posters of people killed by Syrian army and security forces. "The Syrian community in Cairo is counting on the ministerial meeting to adopt punitive measures against the Syrian regime." On Saturday, Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Araby paid a visit to Damascus, where he met Assad. Returning to Cairo, Araby declared that he had agreed with the Syrian president to respond to protesters' demands for reforms. This is Araby's second visit to Syria since the unprecedented demonstrations began, and since he was elected Arab League chief in July. In late August the league's ministerial council asked Araby to present Assad with an Arab initiative to solve the crisis. On Saturday, Al Jazeera ran footage of a demonstration in the Syrian city of Deraa protesting against Araby's visit. Protesters slammed the league's weak stance on the Syrian violence.
