CAIRO: Egyptian hero Gumaa al-Shawan yesterday at Wadi al-Nile Hospital passed away after a long illness. Al-Shawan, also known as Ahmed al-Hawan, was an Egyptian double agent who worked inside the Israeli Mossad from 1967 until 1973. He allegedly provided Israeli intelligence with false military information with the help of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services. The funeral will be held at the al-Gharib Mosque in the Suez Canal area where al-Shawan was born. Condolences can be offered at the Omar Makram Mosque in Cairo, said al-Shawan's brother. Al-Shawan was born on August 6, 1939 and worked to increase Egypt's intelligence position during the war time between Egypt and Israel. His life was depicted in an Egyptian series. In the most recent Suez National Day, al-Shawan narrated his life story, which includes Israeli attempts to lure him with beautiful women and money. Al-Shawan said that his patriotism was never shaken.
