JERUSALEM: Israeli newspaper Maariv today revealed the details of the arrest of an Israeli army major for smuggling drugs to Israel across Egyptian borders. The police also arrested another Israeli border officer. The major leads a gang of eight persons and some Egyptian drug dealers on the Egypt-Israeli border in Sinai, the paper added. The story of discovering the drug gang began on August 30 when one of the suspects was fixing his car at Msubim crossroad. Israeli police ordered him to pull the car away from the crossroad. While a truck was towing the car, the driver called the police after noticing drugs on the back seat of the car. After fixing the car, the accused is stopped at Ramt Jan station by the police for inspection. Seventeen kilograms of hashish (a type of marijuana) and 2,000 hallucinogenic tablets were found in the car. According to investigations with the accused, the police reached and arrested the other accused persons and the accused major in the Israeli battalion in Gaza. Commenting on this case, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Benny Jants said the case is very dangerous, but he did not go into details.
