Sheikh Ahmed Shameet, accused of attempting to assassinate former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Addis Ababa in 1995, has been accepted to run on the parliamentary list of the Construction and Development Party, according to founding member Montasser Mohamed Ahmed. Ahmed said Shameet's papers are finished and he has a chance to run for the People's Assembly on the party's list. Shameet, however, has not decided if he will run with the party's list or as an independent, according to sources close to Shameet. They added he is waiting for the decision by Shura assembly of the Gama'a al-Islamiyya, headed by Essam Derbala. Shameet is from Hager el-Dabeya village located west Luxor, Upper Egypt. He studied at the Faculty of Engineering at Asyut University and joined the Gama'a al-Islamiyya (Islamic Group), which was prevalent at that time at the university. When he was promoted in the group, he was wanted by Egyptian state security for attempting to kill former Minister of Interior Zaki Badr and for burning famous film clubs in Asyut in 1990. He decided to leave Egypt for 21 years. He went to Afghanistan for two years, then spent four years in Sudan. His name was later included as one of the participants in an assassination attempt on Mubarak in Addis Ababa in 1995. The Gama'a al-Islamiyya rewarded Shameet for this, and he became the groups first official in Afghanistan in 1996.
