CAIRO: One of Egypt's oldest protest movements, April 6, has asked the country's ruling military council to cancel a decision to reactivate the Emergency Law. Mohamed Adel, a leader of the movement, said the decision was “twisting people's demands.” The Egyptian people revolted on January 25 against Hosni Mubarak and his Emergency Law, said Adel. In a statement last night, the military council announced that the law will not be repealed until June 2012. He called on the military council to go into negotiations with the country's political powers rather than activating the Emergency Law. He also asked the council to respect the constitutional amendments which provide that any amendments to the Emergency Law should be agreed upon by a public referendum. Adel added that Egyptians do not accept exceptional laws anymore, pointing out that the Egyptian code has laws enough to combat thuggery and terrorism.
