CAIRO: Concerned with women's rights in Egypt, Meranda Moussa decided to establish a new political party for women with the aim of achieving social justice for Egyptian women. The new “Egyptian Women” party seeks to empower women. It seems that women were dropped from calculations of Egyptian society and they cannot receive sovereign positions, said Moussa, although women represent more than half of Egyptian society. Egyptian women are politically deprived, said Moussa. In Tunisia, women make up half the parliament, said Moussa, while women represent only two percent of the Egyptian parliament. ‘Egyptian Women' is a liberal party and men who support women's rights are welcome to join, said Moussa. She also said that the party's main goals revolve around four axes: political, developmental, social, and cultural. Moussa also said Egypt is a civil, democratic state with a constitution derived from Sharia (Islamic law). The party aims to establish sustainable development projects in various fields such as health, education and agriculture, said Moussa. She added that "Egypt must have the potential to grow [its own] wheat, so it can stop importing it from the U.S." The party's legal counselor, Ashgan al-Bokhary, said the party seeks separation of power between the legislative, executive and judicial branches, and that the judiciary must be the only part to supervise the elections. The Egyptian Women Party is still under formation. It has been welcomed by many prominent Egyptian women.
