Car theft in Egypt has increased in the wake of Egypt's January uprising that toppled the country's authoritarian regime and led to a security vacuum in the country, according to Ahmed Aboul Enin, head of the technical committee of cars at the Egyptian Union of Insurance Companies. Enin said his committee works to resolve the problem of car theft, which strongly increased as a result of post-revolution insecurity in Egypt. Enin said the committee decided that the customer should pay 25 percent of the premium to be able to cover losses. He added that the decision has not been executed yet and is still being studied by the Egyptian Union of Insurance Companies. He stressed that the decision, if implemented, would be temporary, especially as insurance companies witnessed tough losses recently due to the increasing theft of cars. He said the decision will be cancelled after security is improved. Enin said his committee will resume its activities after the end of Ramadan because of the lack of time during Ramadan's days. Ramadan is the Islamic holy month in which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. Many companies work shorter days during Ramadan to accommodate the fast.
