Egyptian churches and Coptic intellectuals today rejoiced as the trial for former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak began at the Police Academy. Christian leaders signal this as the beginning of a new era, where the rule of law – not discrimination – will pervade throughout the country. The trial will bring calm to Egyptian streets and to the families of January 25 Revolution martyrs, said Church leaders. The trial brings happiness to Egyptians everywhere since democracy is now in action, said Bishop Cyril. It's only fair and civil for the trial to be publicly broadcast without interference from outside influence or from supporters of those charged, said Andrea Zaki, an Egyptian priest and president of the Anglican community. The trial may play on Egyptians' sympathies, but the law must be applied and the trial must move forward, Zaki added. We hope that the bombings of the St. Mark and Pope Peter Churches in Alexandria will be added to the list of charges against the former Minister of Interior (Habib al-Adly), said Priest Flubateer, member of the Maspiro Youth Union.
