Arabic:حديقة الازهر Al-Azhar Park is a public park located in the heart of Old Cairo, Egypt. The Project for Public Spaces (PPS) listed the park as one of the world's sixty great public spaces. The park boasts a panoramic view of Old Cairo. The park was a gift to Cairo from adescendant of the Fatimid Imam-Caliphs, Aga Khan IV, who founded the city of Cairo in 969.It was created by the Historic Cities Support Program (HCSP) of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The project included the rehabilitation of historic buildings such as the 14th Century Umm Sultan Shaban Mosque, the 13th century Khayrbek complex, and the DarbShoughlan School. It also involved life improvement initiatives such training skills, microfinance, developing areas, and improving health and education. The park was opened to the public in 2005 and includes a restaurant and several gardens that hold an Islamic style. Concerts and cultural events are often held at AzharPark.
