Dr. Nasr al-Sayed, Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Health and head of Preventative Medicine and Endemic Diseases, said the E. coli bacteria has been found in Egypt. He stressed there is no need for fear, because it is a different strain from that which has caused 39 deaths and 3017 infections worldwide. He said that the mutant strain has not reached Egypt. Tests on the suspected E. coli case of a German tourist, found him to be infected with another kind of bacteria. Dr. al-Sayed said studies have proven the consumption of raw legumes is what created this bacteria, and since Egyptians do not consume them in this way, there is little risk of it spreading.
