Debate between Hatata and al-Bastawisi
Published in Youm7 on 05 - 06 - 2011

The religious state ended after Prophet Mohamed's death, said the possible candidate for the next presidential elections, Magdy Hatata. He demanded the establishment of a civil state to protect all citizens regardless of religion preference.
During the second session of debates between the possible candidates of presidential elections, Hatata expressed his readiness to turn to the International Arbitration to force Israel into amending the Camp David treaty, signed in 1979. if he failed to do so in accordance with the Hebrew state. He raised the necessity of reviewing the number of Egyptian troops deployed in Sinai.
Hatata said Israel violated the peace process and it is necessary to turn to the United Nations individually to establish the Palestinian state and to expose the Israeli racial policies in front of the international community.
Hatata criticized the establishment of political parties with Islamic references since it causes sectarian tensions and the increasing intolerance between Muslims and Christians. He said the governmental support for religious powers in 1970s led to a sectarian strife in addition a foreign interference in Egypt's internal affairs.
He wants to issue a law to prevent financial support for political parties considering such support systems were main reasons to cause political corruption during the former regime. He said he disapproves of the parliamentary quote for laborers and farmers, viewing it as a kind of discrimination. He confirmed the percentage doesn't support or improve the agriculture, industry, or state of labors and farmers.
About the economic situation, Hatata said it is necessary to depend on both private and public sectors as main pillars of economic development. He demanded forming an economic base to build the Egypt's economy through increase financial and investment spending. He also focused on the need to improve education and health and other fields related for citizens.
Hatata called to support Egyptian relations with Sudan, saying, "The next president should visit Sudan especially since Egyptians don't know a lot about their Sudanese counterparts. We need to strengthen our relations with Sudan."
The former military official supports Egypt's relations with Iran, refusing Iranian interference in Egypt's affairs. He encourages the Iranian supporting role for Palestinians. He said, “The January 25 Revolution ended differences between both countries." He called for a strategic dialogue to resolve all pending issues. Hatata said Turkey is a friend of Egypt's, with which Egypt needs to expand cooperation.
On the other hand, Counselor Hisham al-Bastawisi stressed the establishment of a democratic state in Egypt. He said preparing a new constitution is more than just holding parliamentary elections. He suggested issuing a number of principles to which the institutional committee, which can authorize establishing a new constitution, must commit.
Possible candidate for the next presidential election, al-Bastawisi supports the establishment of a civil state in Egypt and considers it an agreement among all political powers, specially the religious ones. He said Egypt's religious reference expresses the religious preferences, and refuses such reference to be included in the constitution.
He refused allocating a percentage of parliamentary seats for farmers and labor workers, considering such a percentage would be a contradiction with the multi-party system that Egypt wants to adopt. He demanded limiting financial support for political parties and refuses the formation of religious parties.
Al-Bastwisi said sectarian tensions that Egypt witnessed recently aim to undermine the revolution. He said Egypt needs strict and serious measures to counter and avoid such events and to support equality among all citizens in education and media. He demanded finding national projects to unite visions.
He demanded reviewing the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. He said Egypt needs to restore its sovereignty on its territories in Sinai to achieve real development in this critical area.
He called for coordination between Egypt and Arab states to support the idea of the Arab Common Market and to support the role of the Arab league as an entity to represent the Arab nation.
Al-Bastawisi supports relations with Iran since it is an important in the region. He demanded Iran to be a bridge, which links between Arab states and Asia.
