Egypt's Sisi, Sudan's Al-Burhan renew opposition to Ethiopia's unilateral Blue Nile moves

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan reaffirmed on Wednesday their shared opposition to any unilateral actions on the Blue Nile that could jeopardise the water security of both nations.
During high-level talks in Cairo, Sisi and Al-Burhan underscored growing coordination between the two countries amid lingering regional tensions over Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam and Sudan's internal conflict.
According to a presidential statement, the two leaders agreed to "enhance and intensify mechanisms of consultation and coordination" to safeguard their common water rights. Both leaders warned against measures that violate international law or undermine regional stability.
Sisi welcomed Al-Burhan's visit, praising what he described as the "deep-rooted brotherly ties" between Egypt and Sudan. The two also reviewed the deteriorating situation in Sudan, where months of conflict between rival factions have displaced millions and strained regional diplomacy.
Reiterating Cairo's long-held position, Sisi said Egypt "fully supports Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity," and rejects any attempts to destabilise the country or create parallel governing structures.
For his part, Al-Burhan expressed gratitude for Egypt's continued backing, saying Sisi's efforts reflected "the depth of fraternal relations" between the two peoples and contributed to Sudan's pursuit of peace and recovery.
The talks also touched on the Quad Mechanism — involving Egypt, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates — which is seeking to broker an end to Sudan's war. Both leaders voiced hope that the mechanism's upcoming meeting in Washington later this month will yield concrete progress toward a ceasefire and political settlement.
The discussions marked another show of unity between Cairo and Khartoum, signaling a joint stance on two of the region's most pressing challenges: safeguarding Nile water rights and restoring peace to a fractured Sudan.
