Egyptian Amateur Open golf tournament relaunches after 15-year hiatus

Egyptian Amateur Open golf championship has been relaunched after a 15-year absence, joining the Arab Golf Series in a move aimed at boosting the sport's profile in Egypt and the wider region, the head of the Egyptian Golf Federation has announced.
Omar Hisham Talaat said the 2025 Egyptian Amateur Open tournament represents a new start for golf in Egypt and the Arab world.
"This tournament was and still is part of the story of Egyptian golf, a story of passion, tradition, and excellence," Talaat said during a launch ceremony on Wednesday evening. He noted that the championship, which first began in 1920, has for more than a century been a "symbol of integrity, sportsmanship, and national pride."
The event was attended by Ghassan Kabbani, Vice President of the Africa Golf Confederation, and Mohamed Aziz El Fetni, a member of the executive office of the Arab Golf Federation.
Omar Hisham Talaat said the current edition's inclusion in the Arab Golf Series is a key part of a shared vision to elevate the status of Arab golf and expand the base of professional players.
"Golf in Egypt is entering a new era today, thanks to the expansion of junior programmes, the return of veteran champions, and the emergence of promising talents who deserve support and care," Talaat added, stressing that the federation is building its modern system on the foundations of good governance and professional management.
He also announced that the top finishers in the amateur open will receive invitations to participate in the professional Egyptian Open, in cooperation with the Asian Tour, and the Red Sea International Golf Championship, both scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
Talaat affirmed the federation's commitment to transparency and fairness in player selection through open qualifiers and said the tournament represents more than just a sporting competition.
"It embodies a message of confidence in the abilities of Egyptian and Arab talents, and the spirit of unity and ambition that drives golf towards a brighter future," he said, adding that it marks the beginning of a "new golden age" for a new generation of champions on the global stage.
