SOUTH SINAI, Egypt: A 1,360-year-old shrine was destroyed in an explosion on Saturday evening. The shrine to Sheikh Zewayed was targeted by rocket-propelled grenade weapons, according to reports. Explosives and dynamite were placed beside the shrine's wall, according to eye witnesses. The shrine is now completely destroyed except for al-Sheikh Zewayed's tomb. Zewayed was one of the Prophet Muhammad's companions who died during the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 641. Who exactly is responsible for the explosion remains unknown.
