Arabic: سامي عنان Born: February 1948 Samy Hafez Anan is the Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces and the second-in-command of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces after Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi. Anan participated in the War of Attrition and the 1973 October War (also known as the Yom Kippur War). He was a leader of Egypt's Air Defense. Anan was traveling in the U.S. when the January 25 Revolution began, but cut his trip short and returned to Egypt, leading some to wonder what role Anan should play during such a critical moment. Speculations have also been raised over Anan's political role in Egypt during the coming period, as many international newspapers have described Anan as part of Egypt's political future and an acceptable personality on the Egyptian street.
