Ahli and Egypt midfielder Mohamed Abou-Treika has been voted Player of the Year (based in Africa) despite CAF's initial announcement that Stoppila Sunzu is the winner. An embarrassing error by the African football governing body saw them announce Mazembe's Sunzu as the winner at the Glo-CAF awards ceremony, only to correct their choice minutes later. In addition to Sunzu, Abou-Treika managed to beat off another Zambia and Mazembe star in Rainford Kalaba, who was the third nominee in CAF's list. Despite missing a number of games in Ahli's triumphant Champions League season, the midfield veteran finished as his team's top scorer with six goals. He also excelled at the Club World Cup in Japan, scoring the winner against Hiroshima Sanfrecce to send Ahli to the semis.
