Egypt is facing a possible FIFA sanction as the world governing body monitors the turbulent situation in the country. Egyptian football has been hit by a series of mishaps over the past year, most notably in the aftermath of last February's Port-Said tragedy. The Egyptian FA has been without an appointed board of directors for almost eight months as elections are expected to be held in October. However, FIFA is watching closely as there are concerns over government interference after presidential candidate Hani Abou-Rida had been disqualified from running for the post by a court ruling. Monitoring "At the time of writing we can confirm that FIFA is monitoring the situation in Egypt," a FIFA spokesperson told BBC Sport. "Though no further decisions have been taken with regard to the Egyptian Football Association." The Egyptian domestic league has been disrupted since February as the new season is expected to kickoff on October 17. The future of the competition remains under scrutiny though, with ultras fans warning against the resumption of football in the meantime.
