Ahmed Elmohamady played the whole game as Sunderland crashed out of the English Carling Cup fourth round after losing 1-0 to Championship side Brighton. A header from striker Craig Mackail-Smith five minute into extra time lifted the hosts to conclude a forgettable week for the Black Cats. The disappointing exit comes after just three days of Sunderland's home defeat to bitter rivals Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby. Steve Bruce's side visit newly-promoted Swansea at the weekend as the Welsh club also waved goodbye to the Carling Cup after being upset 3-1 by lower-division Shrewsbury.
