Australia were reduced to ten men after less than half an hour but managed to hold Ghana to a 1-1 draw in a pulsating World Cup clash. Ghana goalie Richard Kingson's awkward save of a Marco Bresciano free kick caused that ball to fall in the path of Brett Holman, who made no mistake from close range. Asamoah Gyan netted the leveler upon converting a penalty kick five minutes from the hour mark. Harry Kewell gifted the Black Stars a spot kick and received a straight red card when he cleared a shot off his goal's line with his arm. Ghana are now one point clear on top of Group D with four points. Australia are languishing at the bottom with a single point. Germany and Serbia, who lie second and third respectively in the same group, have three points each. In Saturday's meeting, Ghana took a stranglehold on the game in the second period but failed to make the most of their numerical advantage. Gyan, who took his overall World Cup scoring tally to 3 goals, could have netted a critical goal on 66 minutes when he released a low shot from inside the area but it went wide. Ghana substitute Quincy Owusu-Abeyie came close to snatching a last-gasp winner, his shot was parried by keeper Mark Schwarzer though.
