A late volley by Brazilian striker Pato earned AC Milan a surprising 3-2 away victory over Real Madrid in a pulsating Champions League clash on Wednesday. Milan and Real are joint leaders in Group C with six points each, three ahead of Marseille and Zurich. Real took the lead on 19 minutes after a dreadful blunder by keeper Dida, who initially collected Esteban Granero's shot but astonishingly spilled the ball in the area to allow Raul to pounce and score into an empty net. The Real skipper, who scored twice in the team's 4-2 Primera Liga victory over Real Valladolid on Saturday, equaled Gerd Mueller's record of 66 goals in European competitions. The Spanish giants dominated possession but barely created goalscoring opportunities until Milan leveled the score in the 62nd minute, thanks to a long-range shot from Andrea Pirlo which beat Iker Casillas at the near post. Casillas was to blame for another Milan goal four minutes later when he rushed out of the area and misjudged a long pass from Massimo Ambrosini to leave Pato with the easiest of tap-ins. Substitute Royston Drenthe restored parity in the 67th minute with a powerful low drive from the edge of the area. Pato had the last word though when he was found unmarked by a neat pass from Clarence Seedorf to volley home at the far post two minutes from time and condemn Real to their first European defeat this season.
